{"id":10867,"date":"2013-04-04T14:51:26","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T04:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=10867"},"modified":"2015-02-15T11:57:15","modified_gmt":"2015-02-15T01:57:15","slug":"liberal-arts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=10867","title":{"rendered":"Liberal Arts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/liberalartsposter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17132\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/liberalartsposter.jpg\" alt=\"liberalartsposter\" width=\"500\" height=\"708\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/liberalartsposter.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/liberalartsposter-211x300.jpg 211w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Director: \u00a0<\/strong>Josh Radnor<br \/>\n<strong>Writer: \u00a0<\/strong>Josh Radnor<br \/>\n<strong>Cast: \u00a0<\/strong>Josh Radnor, Elizabeth Olsen, Zac Efron, Richard Jenkins, Alison Janney<\/p>\n<span class=\"dropcap\">I<\/span>t pretty much does what it says on the tin.<\/p>\n<p><em>Liberal Arts<\/em> is a leisurely stroll for thirty year olds with arts degrees to revisit those memories and reflect upon who they were as students and who they became in their adult life.\u00a0 In this case, Josh Radnor plays Jesse Fisher, a college admissions officer who is sleepwalking his way through life.\u00a0 He becomes re-invigorated when a series of events jolt him out of his wide eyed slumber.\u00a0 Firstly, his girlfriend leaves him.\u00a0 Then he is invited to speak at his alma mater for the retirement of a college professor.\u00a0 There he meets Zibby, a sophmore student who becomes infatuated with Jesse and his appreciation of art and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Jesse is initially pensive about pursuing even a friendship with Zibby because of their age difference and his self awareness of Zibby&#8217;s attraction.\u00a0 In the end, he can&#8217;t help himself and Jesse is soon drawn into revisiting those conversations that you can spend hours on in university that are completely impractical and slip away when you leave it all behind after graduation.\u00a0 Listening to classical music.\u00a0 Attending poetry seminars.\u00a0 Reading classic literature and dissecting its themes over a coffee.\u00a0 Debating theology.\u00a0 Trashing popular culture.<\/p>\n<p>This is the sort of movie where you will know in five minutes whether you&#8217;ll like it or not.\u00a0 Personally, the relatable subject matter meant I connected instantly with Liberal Arts and I spent large parts of the film directly relating the events onscreen to my own experience at Curtin University ten years ago.<\/p>\n<p>It brought back memories of post modern literature classes where we discussed Marcel Foucault.\u00a0 Those hours we spent debating the Iraq War over a game of chess whilst drinking bubble tea with my flatmate.\u00a0 Attending the West Australian Symphony Orchestra with an artsy girl from film class.\u00a0 Making strange and terrible wordless short films about existentialism.\u00a0 Doing nude photography.\u00a0 Spending an entire weekend painting.\u00a0 Going to parties and then sleeping in and missing the lecture the next day.\u00a0 Then deciding to go to the art gallery and cafe instead.\u00a0 Ending up in a dead end job afterwards and clawing your way out of it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/liberalarts.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10868\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/liberalarts.jpg\" alt=\"liberalarts\" width=\"630\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/liberalarts.jpg 630w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/liberalarts-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Liberal Arts<\/em> is an idealistic and optimistic film about studying an arts degree and how it does and doesn&#8217;t prepare you for life outside academia.\u00a0 It&#8217;s self aware but remains carefree.\u00a0 I think it captures the academic delights of studying art and culture without being overly maudlin about the difficulties in finding an engaging career path beyond it.\u00a0 The sadness we see in Richard Jenkins trying to eek out a few more years before retirement is the film&#8217;s nod to &#8216;the bubble&#8217;
