\nSeason Thirty: “World’s Apart”
\nPre Merge Episodes<\/h2>\n

As an unabashed, die hard\u00a0Survivor\u00a0<\/em>fan, I can’t tell you how much I dislike the ‘blood vs water’ gimmick. \u00a0I disliked it so much that I simply stopped watching Season 29 –\u00a0Survivor: Juan Del Sur<\/em> – about five episodes in. \u00a0To this day I have no idea who won it and nor do I care to. \u00a0For some reason, absolutely none of the contestants held my interest and the nature of a show built around playing with family members lead to far too many weak players and safe, boring alliances lasting too long with little disruption.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, my favourite reality tv show is back with a bang. \u00a0As we move into the merge, Worlds Apart<\/em>\u00a0is shaping up to be one of the best seasons in ages. \u00a0It has all the right ingredients that I look for at the start of a new season. \u00a0It has an interesting sociological angle to divide the tribes – they’ve been split by work environments. \u00a0So we get white collar (wealthy, latte sipping office workers), blue collar (gruff, proud, mostly poor) and no collar (“coconut vendor”). \u00a0It created some fabulously entertaining dynamics amongst the tribes when they were separated and also how they treated one another when they came together for challenges.<\/p>\n

The show also had no returning players (yes!!!) and the casting crew have put together one of the most competitive mix of players that I can recall. \u00a0There are about four or five genuinely viable winners in this game. \u00a0Worlds Apart<\/em>\u00a0also has its share of antagonists (Dan – a postie who has trouble relating to women) and stand out characters (a deaf woman and an eccentric millionaire who is a Yahoo exec to name a couple).<\/p>\n

The pre-merge rounds were fiercely and evenly contested with all three tribes winning at least three reward or immunity challenges. \u00a0Poor old So Kim fell victim to the\u00a0Survivor<\/em> curse of an attractive female being the first to go. \u00a0Of the players voted out early, I think I’ll miss Max the most. \u00a0He was a bearded hipster fan of the show who ha a tendency to overanalyse his moves which eventually cost him.<\/p>\n

The choices were easy when picking my pony and poison for this season. \u00a0Jenn Brown from the No Collar tribe was easily my favourite. \u00a0Her laid back, laconic style is offset by a surprisingly sharp sense of gamesmanship and she survived an elimination in the seventh episode when she correctly guessed that her neck was on the chopping block and she played an immunity idol and deflected six votes.<\/p>\n

My poision is the brash, loud and oafish Rodney from the Blue Collar tribe. \u00a0He’s actually playing a pretty strong game and has a decent alliance set up for himself but he annoys me to no end and has a weird attitude towards women (actually, most of the Blue Collar men do). \u00a0Perhaps Rodney is revelling in his role though. \u00a0When I listed my pony and poison picks on Twitter, he ‘favourited’ my comment.<\/p>\n

Here’s hoping the post-merge episodes will be as good as the pre-merge. \u00a0I have a hunch they will \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Stray Observations<\/h2>\n

  • I have no idea what Will – the ‘Youtube star’ – is famous for. \u00a0I don’t think they’ve ever actually stated it on the show either.<\/li>\n
  • I think Tyler from White Collar is a dark horse to win it all. \u00a0He seemingly has no enemies and hasn’t had to play a hard game to secure his spot.<\/li>\n
  • I haven’t seen anyone dominate challenges the way Joe has. \u00a0Of course now he has a target on his back and will likely get booted the first moment he slips.<\/li>\n
  • The White Collar-Blue Collar alliance seems weird to me. \u00a0Once all the No Collars are voted out, surely the smaller White Collar group will be next to go?<\/li>\n
  • I think Dan will get taken to the end because he’s pretty much the perfect goat at this stage. \u00a0Everyone hates him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
