{"id":21361,"date":"2017-06-14T22:29:37","date_gmt":"2017-06-14T12:29:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=21361"},"modified":"2017-06-14T22:30:03","modified_gmt":"2017-06-14T12:30:03","slug":"e3-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=21361","title":{"rendered":"E3 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?attachment_id=21362\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21362\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21362\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/e32017.jpg\" alt=\"e32017\" width=\"620\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/e32017.jpg 620w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/e32017-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"dropcap\">A<\/span>fter back-to-back years of Sony absolutely crushing E3 with the announcements\u00a0of some major\u00a0fan-favourite games in development\u00a0(<em>Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Shenmue HD, The Last Guardian etc.<\/em>), audiences anticipated that E3 2017 would be a quieter year for the annual video game trade show. \u00a0And they were right.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Long before the week of the show, several studios doused cold water on expectations of seeing the latest footage of some highly\u00a0anticipated titles. \u00a0There would be no\u00a0<em>Red Dead Redemption 2.<\/em> \u00a0No <em>The Last of Us 2<\/em>. \u00a0No\u00a0<em>Cyberpunk 2047<\/em>. \u00a0No\u00a0<em>Elder Scrolls<\/em>\u00a0<em>VII<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What audiences could look forward to was a new console unveiling from Microsoft and an opportunity to see if Nintendo could capitalise on their unexpected momentum built up by the early success of the Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s my two cents on the three major conferences and my top ten favourite games from the show.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Microsoft<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div style=\"position: relative; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dZ4GpE3c97U?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Microsoft&#8217;s conference was my most anticipated of the entire show because they had the least to lose and the most to gain. \u00a0The Xbox 360 was easily my most played console <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=11747\"><strong>last generation<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0But the horrendously <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=11365\"><strong>misguided launch<\/strong><\/a> of the Xbox One in 2013 has lead to the system falling out of favour with\u00a0many people, myself included.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Today, there is a glaring lack of attractive first party titles or exclusive third party content on the Xbox One. \u00a0Franchises such as <em>Gears of War<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Halo<\/em> are beginning to feel tired and their popularity is on the wane. \u00a0The cancellation of publicly announced exclusives\u00a0such as <em>Fable<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Scalebound<\/em> have left Microsoft&#8217;s portfolio looking a little lacklustre. \u00a0By comparison, Sony and Nintendo are both far more appealing options.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">An opportunity to right the ship was with the launch of their new console &#8211; Project Scorpio &#8211; which was unveiled at E3 as the <strong>Xbox One X<\/strong>. \u00a0As promised, it will be the most powerful home console on the market when it launches. \u00a0Handily, it will also come with a 4K disc drive (a feature omission that I was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=20858\"><strong>pretty miffed<\/strong><\/a> about with the Playstation 4 Pro).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I think Microsoft did a reasonable job talking up the console from a hardware perspective but things fell apart when it came to pricing and software. \u00a0Unfortunately for Microsoft, there were rumours swirling of an aggressive launch price of USD$399. \u00a0As it turns out, those rumour mongers were $100 off the mark. \u00a0USD$499 (or AUS$649) was the actual\u00a0price. \u00a0Ouch. \u00a0For that money, you would want a killer app on Day One. \u00a0A game that looked so spectacular, that it would be an offer you couldn&#8217;t refuse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?attachment_id=21363\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21363\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21363\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/xboxonex.jpg\" alt=\"xboxonex\" width=\"620\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/xboxonex.jpg 620w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/xboxonex-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Microsoft turned to\u00a0<em>Forza Horizon 7<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Crackdown 3<\/em> and&#8230;actually, that was it. \u00a0They also leaned heavily on showcasing Bioware&#8217;s new IP <em>Anthem<\/em> with a trailer that didn&#8217;t appear to show any gameplay. \u00a0<em>Anthem<\/em>\u00a0isn&#8217;t exclusive to the Xbox One X and nor is it out in 2017.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The lack of first party content once again proved to be Microsoft&#8217;s undoing when it came to generating buzz about their console. \u00a0It was nice to see\u00a0<em>Cuphead<\/em> get a release date and I appreciated the announcement of a new\u00a0<em>Ori<\/em> game but that was about it for me. \u00a0It&#8217;s nice to see them continue their ongoing support for backwards compatibility (original Xbox games will soon work on the Xbox One) but those feature updates are the side dishes to a largely absent main course.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At this stage, I don&#8217;t think there&#8217;s much Microsoft can do to close the gap on the runaway popularity of the Playstation 4. \u00a0But its important that they keep their existing customer base happy and continue their work rebuilding the brand integrity of the Xbox name which took a serious hit back in 2013 and has yet to fully recover. \u00a0The focus must surely be on building a stable of first party games and great third party content. \u00a0It&#8217;s hard to think it could get much worse than where it is today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com\/steam\/apps\/612400\/extras\/TLN_Crowd_01.png?t=1497218099\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"249\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Summing up Microsoft&#8217;s recent run of poor luck, one of the few games they showcased that generated some genuine interest was the slick looking cyberpunk game\u00a0<em>The Last Night<\/em>. \u00a0But just as the hype was begining to build around\u00a0the game, tweets from creator Tim Soret back in 2014 revealed him to be a Gamer Gate sympathiser and that the vision for the game was apparently portraying a dystopian future <em>caused by the rise of feminism<\/em>. \u00a0All the goodwill surrounding the game quickly soured. \u00a0For what its worth, Soret has responded to the controversy by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/e3\/2017\/6\/12\/15780174\/the-last-night-twitter-history-gamergate\"><strong>distancing himself<\/strong><\/a> from those tweets and he says he is a much different person today.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Sony<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div style=\"position: relative; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1wcIzn1sFE4?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After several years of utterly dominating E3, Sony finally came back to Earth with a less grandiose 2017 show. \u00a0But despite a fair bit of public chatter about them having a disappointing show (it was lacking in surprise announcements and heavy hitters), what they had on offer was still pretty positive. \u00a0A big budget\u00a0<em>Spider-man<\/em> game has been something I&#8217;ve been wanting for ages and the new spin-offs\/DLC content in the\u00a0<em>Uncharted<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Horizon<\/em>\u00a0series are a welcome sight.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, there was half a dozen VR games unveiled which was great to see. \u00a0<em>Moss<\/em>, a VR title featuring a pint sized mouse protagonist, looked particularly adorable.<\/p>\n<p>Of the other big flagship titles,\u00a0<em>God of War<\/em> looks genuinely intriguing thanks to the new direction the series is taking with the inclusion of Kratos&#8217; son as a prominent (and apparently playable) character. \u00a0I had less interest in\u00a0<em>Days Gone<\/em>, a zombie apocalypse game that looked seriously derivative and lacking in self-awareness at how cringy its tattoo sleeved, backwards baseball cap wearing, denim clad lead character came across. \u00a0Likewise, David Cage&#8217;s latest project\u00a0<em>Detroit<\/em>, looks like an equally cringe-worthy and clumsy sci-fi parable about racism.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of any new footage of\u00a0<em>Red Dead Redemption<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Last of Us 2,\u00a0<\/em><em>Final Fantasy 7R\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>Shenmue 3<\/em> didn&#8217;t matter to me so much because of how strong the rest of the Playstation ecosystem is. \u00a0There just seems to be a never ending stream of great games in the pipeline. \u00a0Although they didn&#8217;t feature in Sony&#8217;s press conference, I can&#8217;t wait to get my hands on\u00a0<em>Hidden Agenda (<\/em>a multiplayer game that uses mobile phones),\u00a0<em>Yakuza 6, Ace Combat 7\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Superhot VR<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Nintendo<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div style=\"position: relative; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M2mZS_p4A7Y?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nintendo only needed 24 minutes with their E3 Spotlight video and that was all it took for them to be the talk of the town and most people&#8217;s pick to be the &#8216;winner&#8217; of E3. \u00a0In that short period of time, Nintendo continued on their recent run of positive press by dropping one major new game announcement after another. \u00a0Best of all, that new\u00a0<em>Mario Odyssey<\/em> trailer looked seriously amazing and was my favourite game of the show. \u00a0The amount of creativity and charm it packed in a 2 minute show reel was simply absurd.<\/p>\n<p>The hits kept coming. \u00a0A mainline\u00a0<em>Pokemon<\/em> game was confirmed for the Switch. \u00a0<em>Metroid Prime 4<\/em>. \u00a0A 2017 release date for\u00a0<em>Xenoblade 2<\/em>. \u00a0A new 2D\u00a0<em>Metroid<\/em> for the 3DS. \u00a0New Kirby and Yoshi games. \u00a0More\u00a0<em>Breath of the Wild<\/em> content that is only a month away.<\/p>\n<p>The only real downers was the lack of any news about a Mini Super Nintendo or Virtual Console on the Switch. \u00a0But given the terrific press that Nintendo has already built up for themselves, they seem well positioned to continue dolling out these updates over the coming months to keep the positive word of mouth going.<\/p>\n<p>Time will tell if they&#8217;re going to hit the heights of the Wii or the original DS in terms of sales but regardless, it seems like Nintendo is returning to form and the fans are returning in droves. \u00a0The train wreck that was the Wii U is well and truly behind them and the future looks bright.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Top Ten Games of E3 2017<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div style=\"position: relative;
