Youtube Tutorials, smart phones in schools, Facebook invites for birthday parties, mental health awareness &#8211; but its couched with some behavior by the kids that feel pretty universal and timeless to me, like games of Truth or Dare and a boy trying to impress a girl at a pool party by doing a handstand underwater.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?attachment_id=22208\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22208\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22208\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/eighthgrade.jpg\" alt=\"eighthgrade\" width=\"620\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/eighthgrade.jpg 620w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/eighthgrade-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Elsie Fisher plays Kayla, the kid at the centre of the story.\u00a0 Kayla hosts her own vlog on Youtube where she gives friendly advice to other kids about how to make friends, handle peer pressure and so on.\u00a0 The sad irony is that these videos get almost no views and in reality, she is too timid to take her own advice.\u00a0 She is hopelessly anonymous in her school and even wins &#8216;Most Quiet&#8217; in her class yearbook.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Eighth Grade<\/em> is a rather nuanced Coming of Age film so there isn&#8217;t any profound development that suddenly makes Kayla the coolest kid in class or have a radical transformation in her personality.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not\u00a0<em>Clueless<\/em> or\u00a0<em>Ten Things I Hate About You<\/em>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s protagonist doesn&#8217;t even have the quirky indie film mannerisms of a\u00a0<em>Napoleon Dynamite\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>Ladybird<\/em>.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not actually sure I&#8217;ve seen a portrayal of a high school kid like this in a film before.\u00a0 Maybe that&#8217;s why I found\u00a0<em>Eighth Grade<\/em>\u00a0so interesting.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a movie that&#8217;s coloured with lots of clever observations and remembers little details about being a teenager that will have you reflecting on your own experiences after the credits roll.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Elsie Fisher turns in an impressive performance as Kayla.\u00a0\u00a0Her mannerisms that convey her insecurities and anxieties are spot on.\u00a0 The hunched shoulders.\u00a0 The avoidance of eye contact.\u00a0 Her soft spoken speech.\u00a0 It all rings true.\u00a0 You really feel for her when she has her small wins (plucking up the courage to sing karaoke) and its heartbreaking when she is put in a difficult position in the film&#8217;s third act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The rest of the cast in\u00a0<em>Eighth Grade<\/em> are terrific too.\u00a0 Kayla has a particularly touching relationship with her dad Mark (Josh Hamilton) who means well, tries his best but is unsure how to break the barrier between himself and his daughter as her attention is usually locked onto her smartphone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Eighth Grade<\/em> is a bittersweet film of real quality.\u00a0 A lot of the time its characters are either unhappy, unsure of themselves or both.\u00a0 There&#8217;s plenty of humour in the film but a lot of it is rooted in sadness, like Charlie Brown never kicking the football or having the nerve to talk to the Red Haired Girl.\u00a0 Kayla is maybe the best cinematic portrayal I&#8217;ve seen of a Generation Z kid, trying to fumble their way through the challenges of modern life.\u00a0 Without doubt its one of my favourite films of the year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Gucci!<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An introverted teenage girl tries to survive the last week of her disastrous eighth grade year before leaving to start high school.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":22208,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[2775,2776],"class_list":["post-22206","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-films","tag-bo-burnham","tag-elsie-fisher"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22206","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/6"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=22206"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22206\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":22250,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22206\/revisions\/22250"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/22208"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=22206"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=22206"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=22206"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
