\nCast:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Jason Momoa, Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe<\/p>\nB<\/span>lack is white.\u00a0 Up is down.\u00a0 And the biggest DC box office hit of all time is not Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman or the Justice League.\u00a0 It\u2019s Aquaman.\u00a0 The guy whose special power is to talk to fish.<\/p>\n

Of course it\u2019s not entirely without precedent.\u00a0 Some of the biggest Marvel movies now are Guardians of the Galaxy<\/em> and Black Panther<\/em> and who would\u2019ve thought they would even have their own movies ten years ago, let alone become some of the biggest blockbuster films of the modern age.<\/p>\n

James Wan\u2019s Aquaman<\/em> works because despite its (considerable) rough edges, it is the antithesis of the modern DC picture.\u00a0 Unlike the stodgy Batman vs Superman<\/em>, it is full of colour, is light in tone and cheerfully clips along from one explosive set piece to the next.<\/p>\n

The not-so-secret ingredient that makes this work is Jason Momoa.\u00a0 Aquaman<\/em>\u2019s screenplay hands him some pretty wobbly dialogue but his cheerful delivery and considerable on-screen charisma makes it work.\u00a0 Honestly, there are patches of the film where he isn\u2019t particularly coherent, just shouting out one catch phrase after another (\u201cThis is bad ass!\u201d, \u201cI call it an ass-whooping!\u201d) but it just about works because of Momoa\u2019s likeability and earnest delivery.\u00a0 After Aquaman<\/em> he has cemented himself as a box office draw and a career as the modern day Arnie or The Rock beckons.<\/p>\n

\"aquaman\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As you\u2019d expect, Aquaman<\/em> is the origin story of how Arthur Curry, the offspring of a normal human and the Queen of Atlantis learns to embrace his aquatic heritage and become the King of Atlantis.\u00a0 There\u2019s a jealous half-brother, a quest for a special trident and handful of villains including Black Mantis and a leviathan.<\/p>\n

Bringing this adventure to the big screen is James Wan, of Fast and Furious<\/em> fame.\u00a0 He\u2019s the right guy for the job.\u00a0 Explosive, high octane action movies is Wan\u2019s stock and trade.\u00a0 He\u2019s also able to cram the story \u2013 superhero origin, a young couple\u2019s romance, an older couple\u2019s romance, two underwater armies at war, a battle between monarchs for the throne \u2013 basically about four movies worth of content, and smoosh it together into a 140 minutes of popcorn fun.<\/p>\n

Its not always pretty.\u00a0 The poor screenwriters clearly exhaust their ideas for how to transition from exposition to action, so something like FOUR scenes have a character explaining the plot to the audience only to be interrupted by an explosion followed by some goons leading the next charge against the heroes.<\/p>\n

But in the rebuilding of the must much maligned DC Cinematic Universe, Aquaman<\/em> is another step in the right direction.\u00a0 Like Wonder Woman<\/em> before it, the films are elevated by a fantastic casting decision for the lead, and have a freshness about them that any modern Batman or Superman movie can\u2019t really hope to match.\u00a0 The sensational box office performance ensures we\u2019ll get a Aquaman 2, 3 & 4 <\/em>and hopefully the stories can only improve from here.\u00a0 For now, Aquaman<\/em> will be remembered as the breakout performance for Jason Momoa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
