the eponymous Miss Fisher played by Essie Davis &#8211; is a private detective who solves crimes in 1920s post-war Melbourne.\u00a0 The show has many of the same touchpoints that make Hercule Poirot so wonderful:\u00a0 The flashy costumes and resplendent architecture of the era.\u00a0 An ensemble cast of\u00a0murder suspects that typically include retired colonels, wealthy socialites and scheming crooks.\u00a0 A perplexing murder that seems impossible to solve.\u00a0 And of course, a cunning detective who has a faithful sidekick that saves the day when the hapless police officers are unable to solve the case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Miss Fisher<\/em> has all of that and &#8211; <em>I swear I&#8217;m not overstating this<\/em> &#8211; it delivers these tropes just as well as Agatha Christie ever did.\u00a0 What elevates the show to even greater heights is the character of\u00a0Phryne Fisher herself.\u00a0 By virtue of her gender, she is a significant outlier from other detectives in the genre and\u00a0being a fiercely independent, sharp-witted and fearless protagonist\u00a0who agitates and appals the aristocrats around her\u00a0is the source of much of the show&#8217;s best material and banter.\u00a0 It&#8217;s now impossible to imagine any else but Essie Davis in the role, such is her natural ability and raw talent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?attachment_id=23255\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23255\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23255\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/missfishercryptoftearsthumb.jpg\" alt=\"missfishercryptoftearsthumb\" width=\"620\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/missfishercryptoftearsthumb.jpg 620w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/missfishercryptoftearsthumb-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although its been years since the series wrapped up, <em>Miss Fisher<\/em> has clearly maintained a loyal fanbase and when the prospect of a movie was raised, fans quickly provided the necessary financial support via a Kickstarter to get it into production.\u00a0 What we got as a result is\u00a0<em>The Crypt of Tears<\/em>, Miss Fisher&#8217;s first big screen outing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Firstly, the bad news.\u00a0 One of the most beloved characters from the original series, Phyrne&#8217;s faithful sidekick Dot, has only a miniscule bit-part role in\u00a0<em>The Crypt of Tears<\/em>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s for very good reason.\u00a0 Ashleigh Cummings is doing very well for herself Stateside, landing herself a starring role in her own television series <em>NOS4A2<\/em>.\u00a0 I&#8217;m happy to see Cummings do so well but her presence in this film is definitely missed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Honestly, the rest of this movie is gravy.\u00a0 It&#8217;s everything I wanted in a &#8220;<em>Miss Fisher<\/em> but with <em>slightly<\/em> more money&#8221; B-movie production.\u00a0 The excellent Nathan Page returns as DI Jack Robinson, Fisher&#8217;s long-time partner in crime and best romantic tease in a television series since Mulder and Scully.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The set up for the mystery is classic pulp fiction fare from its era.\u00a0 After helping a Bedouin girl named Shirin escape from a prison in Jerusalem, Phryne gets caught up in the mystery of Shirin&#8217;s childhood.\u00a0 A sandstorm wiped out her village when she was little and she was the only survivor thanks to the aid of a mysterious benefactor.\u00a0 This unknown guardian angel reaches out to Shirin and invites her to a clandestine meeting at midnight at the All Saints&#8217; Church.\u00a0 This sets off a chain of events that involve murder, an ancient curse, valuable jewels, car chases and journeys to exotic locations.\u00a0 In many ways,\u00a0<em>The Crypt of Tears<\/em> is as much\u00a0<em>Indiana Jones<\/em> as it is Agatha Christie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?attachment_id=23258\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23258\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23258\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/missfisherscene.jpg\" alt=\"missfisherscene\" width=\"620\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/missfisherscene.jpg 620w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/missfisherscene-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">With the original producers and screen writers returning,\u00a0<em>Miss Fisher<\/em> was always going to be in safe hands.\u00a0 Essie Davis is still an absolute delight on the screen as the eponymous Miss Fisher and the tone of the whole production &#8211;
