T<\/span>he 93rd Academy Awards are almost upon us!<\/p>\n

This will actually be the first Covid-affected Oscars as last year’s event happened just before it all went to shit and in fact many people agree Parasite<\/em> winning Best Picture was the last good thing that happened in 2020 before the rest of the year descended into an absolute dumpster fire.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0year’s ceremony will be emanating from the Dolby Theatre in LA.\u00a0 The Academy have gone to great lengths to make it known that this won’t be a “Zoom meeting” awards ceremony and there will in fact be actors and stars in attendance, without a mask requirement.\u00a0 Delaying the ceremony from the usual February time period to April has paid off as over 180 million Americans have now been vaccinated against the virus and therefore its actually possible to host an event that somewhat resembles the usual fanfare.<\/p>\n

For the third year in a row there is no host, just an assortment of presenters including Bong Joon-Ho, Halle Berry, Brad Pitt and Laura Dern.\u00a0 The show is being produced by Steven Soderbergh (!), Jesse Collins and Stacey Sher.\u00a0 They have said this year’s event will be shot “like a movie”, whatever that means.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The Academy also expanded the eligibility criteria for this year’s event so it’s not just\u00a0Invisible Man<\/em> and\u00a0Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em> competing for Best Picture.\u00a0 In fact, I’ve watched all eight Best Picture nominated films as well as a handful of other films that are contenders in the other categories and let me tell you that the last twelve months were actually pretty goddamn great when it came to movies.\u00a0\u00a0Trial of the Chicago 7, Promising Young Woman, The Father, Minari.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>These are all fantastic films, with terrific performances and interesting stories to tell, most of which I don’t feel are like the traditional “award season” fare.\u00a0 Interestingly,\u00a0Mank<\/em> leads the pack this year with ten nominees, but it’s my least favourite Best Picture contender.<\/p>\n

In terms of films that I thought were snubbed, I’m disappointed not to see\u00a0One Night In Miami<\/em> and\u00a0Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom<\/em> not get recognized in the Best Picture category.\u00a0 Especially since they can have up to ten Best Picture nominations and they only opted to use eight.\u00a0 Those two films are worth your time and easy to track down on Netflix and Amazon Prime.\u00a0\u00a0Delroy Lindo also deserved a Best Actor nom from\u00a0Da 5 Bloods<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Anyway, with that said, here\u00a0are my predictions for the 93rd Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

Who Should\u00a0Win<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It’s honestly one of my\u00a0favourite line up of Best Picture nominees in years.\u00a0 It’s not quite 1995 (Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Four Weddings and a Funeral<\/em>) but four of these films are great, three are\u00a0really great<\/em> and one’s alright.<\/p>\n

The Father<\/em> and\u00a0Sound of Metal<\/em> are wonderful films but I think they deserve recognition in the Best Actor categories for Anthony Hopkins and Riz Ahemd’s performances.\u00a0\u00a0Promising Young Woman<\/em> has a fantastic premise and is well executed, if a little rough around the edges.\u00a0\u00a0Trial of the Chicago 7<\/em> is just a super enjoyable courtroom drama with an awesome ensemble cast that are a joy to watch.<\/p>\n

The standouts for me this year are\u00a0Minari<\/em> and\u00a0Nomadland<\/em>.\u00a0 Both are sublime cinematic productions, with great performances and memorable scenes.\u00a0 I personally connected more directly with\u00a0Minari<\/em>,\u00a0Lee Isaac Chung’s family drama about a Korean-American family that move from California to the Ozarks to start a farm.\u00a0 I don’t think in my heart of hearts that its going to win the award, but it’s definitely my pony in this race.<\/p>\n

Who Will\u00a0Win<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Following the trends at the award shows preceding the Academy Awards, I believe\u00a0Nomadland<\/em> is in the frame to win this one.\u00a0 It would be yet another milestone victory at the Oscars, given that it is directed by Chloe Zhao, the first Asian woman to even land a nomination for Best Director.<\/p>\n

Nomadland<\/em>‘s\u00a0biggest competition is\u00a0Mank<\/em>, David Fincher’s polished and well reviewed drama about the uncredited original screenwriter of\u00a0Citizen Kane<\/em>.\u00a0 I think its by far the safest and most conventional film in the category, but the fact that it leads the race this year with ten nominations total, means its appeal to the Academy voters can’t be discounted.\u00a0 After last years shock win for\u00a0Parasite<\/em> though, I feel safer making the call that\u00a0Nomadland<\/em> wins the big one.<\/p>\n

There’s some weird nominations in this category, man.\u00a0 I’m not sure how Vinterberg and Fennell got on this shortlist at the expense of Regina King (One Night In Miami<\/em>) or George C.Wolfe (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom<\/em>).\u00a0 For that matter, who did Aaron Sorkin (Trial of the Chicago 7<\/em>) piss off to not get a nomination?<\/p>\n

As is the case in most years, my thoughts and opinions on who deserves Best Picture is heavily tied to who should get Best Director.\u00a0 Chung and Zhao are both more than worthy winners in this category but I know that Frances McDormand approached Chloe Zhao to\u00a0get involved with\u00a0Nomadland<\/em> whereas\u00a0Minari<\/em> is a straight up labour of love for Chung who conceptualized, wrote and directed his film.<\/p>\n

Who Will\u00a0Win<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I didn’t think a year after Bong Joon-Ho won Best Director that we’d be looking at back-to-back Asian winners but here we are.<\/p>\n

Fincher is a very good chance to win this award.\u00a0 The academy loves movies about Hollywood itself.\u00a0 The origins of the film (written by Fincher’s late father Jack) make for a nice\u00a0“feel good” story.\u00a0 I wouldn’t be totally surprised if he wins.\u00a0 But I’d be even more surprised if Chloe Zhao doesn’t get the goods.\u00a0\u00a0Nomadland<\/em> is just such a beautifully made, skillfully crafted cinematic experience.\u00a0 All the momentum is on Zhao’s side here.<\/p>\n

Who Should\u00a0Win<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This category is tough<\/em>.\u00a0 There are some absolutely incredible performances in this line up.<\/p>\n

The two stand outs for me are Riz Ahmed and Anthony Hopkins.\u00a0 Ahmed plays Ruben, a drummer in a metal band who starts to lose his hearing.\u00a0 Ahmed is a man who clearly takes his craft seriously as he learned sign language and how to play the drums for the role.\u00a0 It’s worth it because the performance he delivers is absorbing, complex and nothing less than totally convincing.\u00a0 I didn’t really know much about\u00a0Sound of Metal<\/em> before I watched it but I was blown away thanks to Riz Ahmed.\u00a0 It’s a film that deserves a wider audience.<\/p>\n

Hopkins is another incredible story.\u00a0 He has nothing left to prove at 83 years of age, having already won a Best Actor Oscar for\u00a0Silence of the Lambs<\/em>.\u00a0 Yet his performance in\u00a0The Father<\/em>, of an elderly man succumbing to dementia, is so extraordinary and masterful, I think it’s gotta be him.\u00a0 In a career flush with legendary performances, this might actually be one of his very best.\u00a0 It’s an emotionally draining film to watch but you absolutely should because he’s so damn good at what he does.<\/p>\n

Cancer fucking sucks.\u00a0 Like everyone else, I felt totally blindsided and devastated when we lost Chadwick Boseman who had privately been battling colon cancer whilst making a name for himself worldwide as the Marvel superhero\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Boseman was a talented actor but I suspect most people didn’t fully appreciate just how good he could be in a more\u00a0serious role, when he wasn’t donning the superhero tights.\u00a0\u00a0Ma Rainey<\/em> is a fantastic showcase for his talents and I have no qualms with Boseman picking up the sentimental send-off Oscar win for this performance.<\/p>\n

Who Should\u00a0Win<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I haven’t seen as many films in this category as I would like with both United States vs Billie Holiday<\/em> and\u00a0Pieces of a Woman<\/em> on my watchlist still.<\/p>\n

Viola Davis delivered one of my favourite performances this year in\u00a0Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom<\/em>.\u00a0 She is tough as nails, pissed off, powerful and takes absolutely no shit from anyone, least of all the crooked recording studio producers that she sees straight through.\u00a0 It was a film that I initially mistook to set up Ma as an out-of-touch diva who gets bamboozled by Chadwick Boseman’s smooth talking trumpeter Levee, but\u00a0Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom<\/em> didn’t exactly unfold the way I expected and it was all the better for it.<\/p>\n

I can’t see Davis winning this category but holy cow was it a great performance.<\/p>\n

Who Will\u00a0Win<\/strong><\/h2>\n

What an absolute force of nature Frances McDormand is.\u00a0 I’ve loved her ever since her debut performance in the Coen Brother’s neo-noir classic\u00a0Blood Simple<\/em>.\u00a0 She made us root for her as Marge Gundersson in\u00a0Fargo<\/em>.\u00a0 Then lately she put her name back up in lights all over again in\u00a0Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Nomadland<\/em>, McDormand\u00a0plays the role of Fern, a homeless woman living out of her van who lives through hardship, heartache and grief.\u00a0 It’s a subtle but impressive performance, and almost certainly will win her the Best Actress award.\u00a0 It’s the closest thing to a sure thing on this night.<\/p>\n

Who Should\u00a0Win<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Someone stuffed up somewhere because apparently the Academy nominated both Judas (Stanfield)\u00a0and<\/em> the Black Messiah (Kaluuya) for a Best Supporting Oscar.\u00a0 Who’s the lead in the movie then???<\/p>\n

Sacha Baron Cohen’s performance as the disruptive activist Abbie Hoffman absolutely rules and is one of the most flat out entertaining performances I’ve seen.\u00a0 If I’m honest though, I actually like Frank Langella and Mark Rylance’s performances from the same film\u00a0even better<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Leslie Odom Jr, of\u00a0Hamilton<\/em> fame, is\u00a0fantastic as Sam Cooke in\u00a0One Night in Miami<\/em>.\u00a0 He closes out the film with an incredible rendition of “A Change Is Gonna Come” that has had me listening to hours of Sam Cooke records ever since.<\/p>\n

I’ve seen every performance on this nomination list, they’re all worthy, but I gotta tip the hat to Leslie Odom Jr.<\/p>\n

I dunno hey.\u00a0 This is a tricky category to pick since I expect the night to mostly be the “Mank<\/em> and Nomadland<\/em> show” and they’re not represented in this category.<\/p>\n

I’ve flipped a coin, rolled some dice, drew straws and decided it’ll be Sacha Baron Cohen.\u00a0 In ordinary circumstances I think Kaluuya would get it but I think his chances are hurt by Stanfield also being nominated and splitting the vote for people who liked\u00a0Judas and the Black Messiah<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What the hell is Maria Bakalova doing on this list?\u00a0 Why is Glenn Close here?\u00a0 I think they could have done a way better job with the nominations.<\/p>\n

Olivia Coleman is brilliant as the patient and compassionate daughter dealing with a father in the final stages of dementia in\u00a0The Father<\/em>.\u00a0 I would be delighted to see her get the award.<\/p>\n

My personal favourite however would be Youn Yuh-jung’s enormously entertaining and sweet performance as the cantankerous grandmother in Minari<\/em> who swears, watches pro wrestling and teaches her grandson how to win\u00a0at cards.\u00a0 A hilarious but\u00a0also sweet-natured and heart-warming performance.<\/p>\n
