{"id":2581,"date":"2010-07-13T18:09:12","date_gmt":"2010-07-13T08:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=2581"},"modified":"2010-07-16T07:24:02","modified_gmt":"2010-07-15T21:24:02","slug":"the-opposition-leader-tony-abbott","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=2581","title":{"rendered":"The Opposition Leader: Tony Abbott"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagauselection.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2484\" title=\"tagauselection\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagauselection.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagauselection.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagauselection-300x37.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to politicans and their policies, does it matter whether they genuinely believe in them?\u00a0 With Prime Minister Julia Gillard it seems pretty clear that a significant proportion of her policies exist specifically because they will increase the likelihood of her re-election and do not stem from any personal feeling one way or another.\u00a0 How else to explain her backing of Kevin Rudd&#8217;s policies when she served in his cabinet only to then turn around and embark in a wholy different direction when she succeeded him (see: mining tax, immigration policy etc).<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand is it better to have a leader who doesn&#8217;t impose their own beliefs on the country?\u00a0 Someone who is open to the idea of changing their approach when they realise what they have tried hasn&#8217;t worked?<\/p>\n<p>One thing is for certain: Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is that rare politician where What You See Is What You Get.\u00a0 Honest to a fault.\u00a0 In Australian terms, <em>fair dinkum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2582\" style=\"width: 326px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/budgiesmugglers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2582\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2582\" title=\"budgiesmugglers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/budgiesmugglers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/budgiesmugglers.jpg 316w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/budgiesmugglers-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 316px) 100vw, 316px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tony Abbott<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In some ways he reminds me of the gormless government minister Simon Foster from Armando Iannucci&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=949\">In The Loop<\/a>.\u00a0 I thought in this post-Sarah Palin political landscape, politicans in high profile positions would have 24 hour minders, much in the same way that pop stars do, to stop them from having a brain explosion and saying things like &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com.au\/national\/dont-believe-everything-i-say-tony-abbott\/story-e6frfkvr-1225867979082\">don&#8217;t believe everything I say<\/a>&#8216; (Abbott, May 2010).<\/p>\n<p>Tony Abbott is often presented as a figure of ridicule by his opponents for his conservative Christian values.\u00a0 While Australian is predominantly a Christian nation so this isn&#8217;t a political handicap in of itself, Abbott still has a habit of phrasing things that makes him come across like one of those characters out of Pleasantville.\u00a0 Sure he&#8217;s <em>that Christian guy<\/em> but you still can&#8217;t quite believe it when he casually implies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com.au\/breaking-news\/tony-abbott-started-ironing-this-week\/story-e6frfku0-1225829534250\">that housework and ironing is women&#8217;s work<\/a>, or that he rather bluntly describes homosexuals as <a href=\"http:\/\/googleads.sgdoubleclick.net\/pagead\/nclk?sa=L&amp;ai=1&amp;fadurl=googleads.g.doubleclick.net&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fblogs.news.com.au%2Fheraldsun%2Fandrewbolt%2Findex.php%2Fheraldsun%2Fcomments%2Fwhat_does_abbott_fear_they_might_do_to_him%2F&amp;aclck=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.looksmartmarket.net%2Findex.php%3Fsearch%3Dtony%2Babbott%2Buncomfortable%2Bgays\">making him feel uncomfortable<\/a> or that he believes a women&#8217;s virginity is <a href=\"http:\/\/googleads.sgdoubleclick.net\/pagead\/nclk?sa=L&amp;ai=1&amp;fadurl=googleads.g.doubleclick.net&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theage.com.au%2Fopinion%2Fmemo-abbott-virginity-debate-is-no-mans-land-20100127-mz0y.html&amp;aclck=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.looksmartmarket.net%2Findex.php%3Fsearch%3Dtony%2Babbott%2Bthe%2Bgreatest%2Bgift\">a &#8216;gift&#8217; to be given to a lucky man<\/a>.\u00a0 These are the phrases and media soundbytes of a man who is giving his honest unvarnished opinion and is apparently unphased by how they make him come across.<\/p>\n<p>I guess we should applaud the honesty but in actuality, I find most of it doesn&#8217;t improve my opinion of Tony Abbott at all.\u00a0 I&#8217;d rather not have a guy with archaic social values as a Prime Minister although its nice to know he doesn&#8217;t try and hide his beliefs.\u00a0 Its great that he&#8217;s open enough to admit that he wouldn&#8217;t really go to any great lengths to prevent Japanese whaling on Australia&#8217;s coastline because he doesn&#8217;t want to damage <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/stories\/2010\/01\/11\/2789944.htm\">their economic ties<\/a> but it doesn&#8217;t really change the fact that that is pretty lousy reasoning.\u00a0 And yes, while it shows a perplexing level of frankness to say &#8216;don&#8217;t believe everything I say&#8217;
