{"id":2595,"date":"2010-07-22T20:23:59","date_gmt":"2010-07-22T10:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=2595"},"modified":"2010-10-12T07:58:46","modified_gmt":"2010-10-11T21:58:46","slug":"death-at-intervals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=2595","title":{"rendered":"Death At Intervals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tfwbookclub.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2474\" title=\"tfwbookclub\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tfwbookclub.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tfwbookclub.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tfwbookclub-300x37.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_2598\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/dai.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2598\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2598\" title=\"dai\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/dai.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/dai.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/dai-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Death At Intervals<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I&#8217;ve just finished reading Jose Saramago&#8217;s <em>Death At Intervals<\/em>.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t really know what to make of it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about the strangest thing I&#8217;ve read all year and thats including a book that has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Kafka-Shore-Haruki-Murakami\/dp\/1400079276\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1279144628&amp;sr=8-1\">KFC&#8217;s Colonel Sanders appearing as a pimp in Japan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So in <em>Death At Intervals<\/em>, an unnamed country discovers the complete absense of death one New Years Day.\u00a0 Not only does no one pass away from natural causes, the ability to die appears to have ceased period.\u00a0 So unfortunately, for people on their deathbed or those who are terminally ill, they too remain alive.\u00a0 Overall though, the country initally reacts with jubilation to the news that death is a thing of the past.\u00a0 Unfortunately, those in the undertaking business and religious leaders react less favourably.\u00a0 After all, why bother with church if you can&#8217;t actually get to heaven?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After a period of seven months (and about half the book) Death eventually returns to the unnamed city.\u00a0 Then Death decides to leave memos for people giving them a week&#8217;s notice of their impending death.\u00a0 Then Death takes on the physical form of a woman and starts spelling her name with a lowercase &#8216;d&#8217;.\u00a0 Then she becomes infatuated with and eventually falls in love with a musician who was given the week&#8217;s notice memo but doesn&#8217;t die.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8230;huh?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This book is one of the weirdest I&#8217;ve read in a while.\u00a0 The tone at the start is comparable to<em> Blindness<\/em> but then its as if two thirds of the way through, Saramago decides he can&#8217;t really be stuffed to keep writing the story but then catches Nicolas Cage on the television in <em>City of Angels<\/em> and then decides &#8216;thats a sweet idea&#8217; and goes off on that tangent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Seriously, what the hell?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve just finished reading Jose Saramago&#8217;s Death At Intervals.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t really know what to make of it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about the strangest thing I&#8217;ve read all year and thats including a book that has KFC&#8217;s Colonel Sanders appearing as a pimp in Japan.
