{"id":5382,"date":"2011-06-30T20:07:16","date_gmt":"2011-06-30T10:07:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=5382"},"modified":"2012-02-28T22:09:19","modified_gmt":"2012-02-28T12:09:19","slug":"bridesmaids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=5382","title":{"rendered":"Bridesmaids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not one to shy away from the hand that feeds, Katherine Heigl once mentioned in Vanity Fair that she felt that Judd Apataow&#8217;s film <em>Knocked Up<\/em>, which is credited with helping her transition from a television star to leading lady in films, was sexist because of its portrayal of women as joyless workaholic whiners.<\/p>\n<p>Even now, it seems an odd complaint and none of Heigl&#8217;s acting choices since then appear to be particularly empowering or show women in any more favourable light.\u00a0 She took the role of a woman who has been a bridesmaid 27 times and lusts after her sister&#8217;s fiancee, then followed it up by playing a character who falls in love with a relationship guru who claims that men are only interested in women&#8217;s looks.<\/p>\n<p>You can&#8217;t help but wonder whether the remark got to Apatow however.\u00a0 After being involved in the creation of a string of bro-mance films (<em>Pineapple Express, Superbad, Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin<\/em>) he has suddenly produced a film written by two women and is almost exclusively centered around the dynamics of friendship amongst women.\u00a0 How single minded is this focus?\u00a0 Lillian&#8217;s fiancee doesn&#8217;t have a single line of dialogue in the entire film.\u00a0 He just stands there and smiles while the women have at it.<\/p>\n<p>The central character in the story is Annie, played by Kirsten Wiig, who has been asked to be the maid of honour at her friend Lillian&#8217;s wedding.\u00a0 Wiig, a Saturday Night Live alumni, is an immensely likable actor much in the same vein as Tina Fey.\u00a0 She seems relatable and down to earth, the anti-thesis of more traditional rom-com stars such as Julia Roberts or Drew Barrymore.<\/p>\n<p>The drama in the film arises when Annie begins to feel that she is losing out on her friendship with Lillian to Helen, a wealthy trophy wife who threatens to outshine Annie at every turn with her obscene flaunting of wealth.\u00a0 Wiig certainly isn&#8217;t afraid to make Annie come off as a tad unlikeable as she reacts in a fiercely negative fashion to what she perceives as Helen moving in on her turf.\u00a0 There&#8217;s also a side story involving Annie choosing between an Irish cop and an arrogant millionaire in her own love life.<\/p>\n<p><em>Bridesmaids<\/em> sort of feels like you&#8217;re getting three films in one.\u00a0 The advertising is wisely promoting it as an ensemble-cast lowbrow comedy thats a girl&#8217;s version of <em>The Hangover<\/em>. It&#8217;s also got the usual tropes of a standard fish-out-of-water rom-com where the love interest is right under the main character&#8217;s nose the whole time but they&#8217;re attracted to Mr Wrong for most of the film.\u00a0 Mostly though, its about the friendship and bond between two women which&#8230;actually, I can&#8217;t really think of a comparison.\u00a0 When was the last time someone made a film about that?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think Katherine Heigl has done one of those yet.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s this Jack Of All Trades quality that makes <em>Bridesmaid<\/em> have such a broad appeal.\u00a0 I think almost everyone should find something funny in this film.\u00a0 I personally enjoyed the uncomfortably honest sex and relationship conversations that Annie and Lillian have.\u00a0 Others will prefer the 20-minute-long poop gag at the gown fitting scene.\u00a0 This is a film that has it all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ladyfriends<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[991,992,993],"class_list":["post-5382","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-films","tag-bridesmaids","tag-judd-apatow","tag-kirsten-wiig"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5382","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/6"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=5382"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5382\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":6839,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5382\/revisions\/6839"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=5382"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=5382"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=5382"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
