{"id":5732,"date":"2011-09-13T20:28:37","date_gmt":"2011-09-13T10:28:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=5732"},"modified":"2011-09-13T20:36:07","modified_gmt":"2011-09-13T10:36:07","slug":"rugby-world-cup-opening-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=5732","title":{"rendered":"Rugby World Cup Opening Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5692\" style=\"width: 605px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagrwc2011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5692\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5692\" title=\"tagrwc2011\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagrwc2011.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"68\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagrwc2011.jpg 595w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagrwc2011-300x34.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The RWC - Causing 4 million Kiwis to simultaneously cry every four years since 1991<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>New Zealand 41 Tonga 10<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The All Blacks have a weird quality about them that my in-law Matt once observed.\u00a0 Second tier teams such as Samoa, Tonga, Scotland, Ireland and Wales can all have competitive games against one another and against top tier sides such as England, Australia and South Africa but for some reason whenever they are pitted against the All Blacks, they are crushed in resounding fashion.\u00a0 It actually makes most All Black fixtures that aren&#8217;t against England, Australia or South Africa rather dull to watch since these games are usually over as a contest within the first twenty minutes.\u00a0 This game was no different with the ABs piling on the points quick and early.\u00a0 They unexpectedly stalled in the second half but who cares?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think there was much you could read into it.\u00a0 Their goals in the group stage are probably to stay injury free and maybe see if they can hit triple digits against Japan.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Australia 32 Italy 6<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Australia got off to a sputtering start in the tournament.\u00a0 They played in wet conditions at North Harbour stadium and looked rather ordinary in an error riddled first half that saw a few squandered try scoring opportunities and Quade Cooper missing a goal from right in front.\u00a0 They subbed on James O&#8217;Connor in the second half and shifted into another gear as the weather improved.\u00a0 They piled on four tries, secured the bonus point and found their form.\u00a0 Unfortunately it came at a heavy cost &#8211; Digby Ioane out with a broken thumb.\u00a0 It is crucial he return in the later stages of the tournament as the All Blacks cannot tackle him.\u00a0 Fingers crossed for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Minnows Step Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There were several games in this tournament that were expected to be lopsided affairs which turned into anything but.\u00a0 Underdogs Romania, Japan, USA and Argentina all put on excellent performances and although none of the upsets eventuated, few people would have pegged that Argentina would be leading England late in the game or that Romania would be ahead of Scotland with ten minutes on the clock.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This presents the IRB with an interesting opportunity &#8211; there is a real chance here to expand the reach of the game beyond the traditional rugby playing nations.\u00a0 Unfortunately, when Argentina finished 3rd in 2007, the IRB failed to help Argentina continue their development into becoming a top class rugby nation &#8211;\u00a0 they played just 17 games in the next four years which is hardly ideal.\u00a0 What these underdog teams need is regular competition against similar quality or better opponents.\u00a0 Can the IRB deliver?<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Why Are England So Goddamn Boring In Every Major Sports Tournament, I Swear To God<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Doesn&#8217;t matter if its football, rugby, league or any other team sport.\u00a0 Trust good ol&#8217; England to stink up the place with some dull and conversative tactics that disinterest viewers and sees them only barely scrape through to the next round.\u00a0 Zzzzzz&#8230;.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
