{"id":5908,"date":"2006-10-24T11:07:20","date_gmt":"2006-10-24T01:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=5908"},"modified":"2014-08-13T13:58:20","modified_gmt":"2014-08-13T03:58:20","slug":"brick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=5908","title":{"rendered":"Brick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/brickposter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16124\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/brickposter.jpg\" alt=\"brickposter\" width=\"500\" height=\"723\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/brickposter.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/brickposter-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Director: \u00a0<\/strong>Rian Johnson<br \/>\n<strong>Writer: \u00a0<\/strong>Rian Johnson<br \/>\n<strong>Cast: \u00a0<\/strong>Joseph Gordon Levitt, Emilie de Ravin<\/p>\n<p>There will be a portion of viewers who watch Brick that will find it difficult to get past the gimmick.\u00a0 It is a high school mystery told in the style of film noir.\u00a0 This is a film that is stacked with hoodlums, a damsels in distress, a femme fatale, a detective and a ruthless kingpin.\u00a0 Only they&#8217;re in the guise of jocks, cheerleaders, nerds and greasers at a high school.<\/p>\n<p>Like the plastic bag scene in <em>American Beauty<\/em>, it&#8217;s something that either works for you or it doesn&#8217;t.\u00a0 Fortunately with <em>Brick<\/em>, you&#8217;ll know pretty early on in the film if this is to your taste.\u00a0 Me?\u00a0 I liked it.\u00a0 Even loved it, in parts.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Gordon-Levitt is our hard boiled detective Brendan who discovers his ex-girlfriend lying face down dead in a drainage ditch at the start of the film.\u00a0 He must piece together the evidence and solve the mystery.<\/p>\n<p><em>Brick<\/em> throws the viewer into the film&#8217;s world without wasting any time.\u00a0 The characters talk fast and the story gets complicated quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The way that the director Rian Johnson has approached the film is to have the actors play it straight so that there aren&#8217;t any knowing winks to the audience.\u00a0 But the film is also self-aware and can still make fun of its own premise.\u00a0 Most notable is a scene where the druglord known as The Pin and Brendan have a meeting over the family dinner table and there is an important conversation that is interupted periodically by The Pin&#8217;s mom who serves the kids food and drink.\u00a0 Only a moment ago, The Pin&#8217;s goons were laying a hellacious beating on Brendan.\u00a0 Brick is very adept and switching its tone from laughter to viciousness.\u00a0 Not unlike some of the Coen Brothers&#8217;
