{"id":6614,"date":"2012-01-23T22:26:28","date_gmt":"2012-01-23T12:26:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=6614"},"modified":"2014-05-03T17:42:42","modified_gmt":"2014-05-03T07:42:42","slug":"the-skin-i-live-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=6614","title":{"rendered":"The Skin I Live In"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Maybe I&#8217;m just getting conservative at the ripe old age of 29 but how is it that <em>The Skin I Live In<\/em>, a Spanish film from director Pedro Almodavar, is not talked about in wider circles as being one of the strangest and creepiest films since <em>Oldboy<\/em>?\u00a0 I mean its not exactly like the film is flying under the radar.\u00a0 It&#8217;s got Antonio Banderas in it and its a film thats up for an Oscar.\u00a0 And yet when I settled down to watch this film, I had no idea what I was in for.\u00a0 The feedback from reviews and preview screenings seem to range from &#8216;meh&#8217; to &#8216;pretty good&#8217;.\u00a0 No one seemed to share my reaction of &#8216;this is absolutely bonkers.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t even. <strong>What the hell is this?<\/strong>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Most of my pre-screening impressions were formed on that awesome title and this excellent poster.\u00a0 I like how it gives you a hint of whats to come and looks like it could be a low budget sci-fi film with Banderas as a mad scientist (well, he sort of is).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is a film where its really difficult to review and assess without spoiling the storyline so here&#8217;s the deal:\u00a0 If you even have the slightest inclination to watch the film, don&#8217;t read below the text beneath the poster.\u00a0 Come back afterwards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/theskinposter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6615\" title=\"theskinposter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/theskinposter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/theskinposter.jpg 450w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/theskinposter-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Spoilers ahead.<\/p>\n<p>So lets cut to the chase.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The film is about a plastic surgeon Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) whose wife is horrible disfigured from the flames of a serious car accident.\u00a0 She slowly recovers but is kept sheltered from her appearance.\u00a0 One day, hearing the sound of her daughter singing in the courtyard, she approaches the window of her bedroom and catches a glimpse of herself in the reflection.\u00a0 She cries out at the sight of her own disfigured appearance and commits suicide.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>This deeply disturbs her daughter who requires psychiatric treatment afterwards.\u00a0 She grows up as a socially abnormal teenager, unused to interacting with people her own age.\u00a0 Eventually the daughter is allowed out to a party where she meets a teenage boy Vicente.\u00a0 They sneak out to a garden and when Vicente makes sexual advances, Robert&#8217;s daughter panics and is unable to deal with the situation.\u00a0 Vicente freaks out, strikes the girl and runs away.\u00a0 Robert rushes to his daughters aid and decides to get his revenge on Vicente for sexually assaulting his daughter.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>He kidnaps Vicente and gives him a vaginoplasty.<\/em><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Thats probably a strange enough turn of events for most films.\u00a0 Not so with The Skin I Live In.\u00a0 Vicente is then continuously operated on until he takes on the resemblance of Robert&#8217;s deceased wife.\u00a0 Then Robert keeps him in captivity.\u00a0 Not long afterwards, a man dressed as tiger breaks into the house.\u00a0 He is the son of Robert&#8217;s caretaker and unbeknownst to either of them, they are actually half brothers.\u00a0 The man dressed as a tiger rapes Vicente (now named Vera) before Robert returns home, discovers what has happened and shoots him dead.\u00a0 Then Robert starts having sex with Vera because she looks like his dead wife but of course Vera is actually Victente the teenage boy who sexually assaulted his daughter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Vera shoots Robert dead after they have sex and escapes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There you have it.\u00a0 A film to rival <em>Old Boy<\/em> for its twisted content.<\/p>\n<p>It sounds ridiculous and it is.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m convinced that there exists a niche audience who can find some appreciation for this film.\u00a0 Its a preposterous tale but one thats clearly told by someone that has an eye for both artistic flair and a sense of macabre.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not shot as an exploitation film and has some particularly interesting imagery &#8211;
