{"id":674,"date":"2009-06-18T22:17:41","date_gmt":"2009-06-18T12:17:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=674"},"modified":"2009-06-30T21:48:21","modified_gmt":"2009-06-30T11:48:21","slug":"mega-shark-versus-giant-octopus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/?p=674","title":{"rendered":"Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus<\/em> is a film that never quite delivers on the potential of such a great premise.\u00a0 I think the worst accusation you can throw at a production about an oversized shark and octopus fighting to the death is that the film actually manages to feel quite dull at times.<\/p>\n<p>It might just be that I&#8217;m quite particular about how I want these movies to be:  comically gory, starring likeable down on their luck b-grade actors and love interests with big permed hair-styles.\u00a0  Oh, and low budget special effects.<\/p>\n<p>That last point is something that I think I may have to grudgingly let go as its probably cheaper and easier nowadays to use computer effects rather than having people thrashing around fighting rubber tentacles or a guy in a shark suit.\u00a0  The days of seeing the types of effects in classics such as <em>Crocodile <\/em>(animatronics), <em>Rats <\/em>(puppies dressed in rat costumes) and <em>The Toxic Avenger <\/em>(prosthetic limbs being torn off) sadly seem to be behind us and instead we get films that have entirely computer-generated special effects that have the same lack of physicality that plagues films like <em>Star War Episode I<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The story stars a smart and sexy oceanographer played by Deborah Gibson, who teams up with a Japanese scientist and her old Irish college professor to help aid a government organisation battle a giant prehistoric shark and octopus who were freed from melting polar ice caps.<\/p>\n<p>The film has moments of promise.\u00a0  The guy playing Lamar, the Irish professor, has the worst accent I&#8217;ve ever heard.\u00a0  The surly FBI agent guy is pretty good too.\u00a0  And yet the main attraction, the monsters themselves, are a real letdown.\u00a0  I think its possible that they are too big.\u00a0  They dwarf entire oil rigs and navy battlecruisers.\u00a0  So there&#8217;s nothing like the classic imagery you get from <em>Jaws<\/em> or <em>King Kong<\/em> where the monsters come face to face with a hapless human screaming for help.\u00a0 <em>Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus<\/em> is far too distant and removed.\u00a0  This made me pretty indifferent to the action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_675\" style=\"width: 492px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-675\" class=\"size-full wp-image-675\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/vlcsnap-824684.png\" alt=\"Mega Shark eating an airplane is one of the film's few high points\" width=\"482\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/vlcsnap-824684.png 688w, http:\/\/www.thefatwebsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/vlcsnap-824684-300x167.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mega Shark eating an airplane is one of the film&#39;s few high points<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With rather bland action scenes, it falls on the dialogue and campy acting to carry the film and unfortunately, neither deliver strongly enough.\u00a0  There&#8217;s certainly nothing on par with the quality of dialogue from <em>Megalodon 3<\/em>, thats for sure.<\/p>\n<p><em>Megalodon 3:\u00a0 a better film<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ho hum.  Such is life.  I believe the rather successful advertising campaign for this film (over a million hits online for its trailer) will likely ensure a sequel of sorts.  I&#8217;d like to recommend Mega Scorpion vs Giant Panda.  I think that has potential.\u00a0 This film just felt like an opportunity squandered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shark versus Octopus in a battle for the ages.
