William Moody, best known for his role as Paul Bearer, passed away this week at the age of 58.
Paul Bearer was one of the most widely recognizable, larger than life characters in the world of professional wrestling. You only needed to have a passing interest in wrestling to remember his distinctive pale face and high pitched voice, with his signature catch cry ‘Ohhhhhhh Yesssssss‘. Wrestling is a pretty scummy business but Bearer was one of the industry’s good guys with people having nothing but good things to say about him as both a performer and a friend backstage. As I read about his early days in the WWF, it’s interesting to learn his role as a mentor who guided The Undertaker as rookie, keeping him out of trouble and ensuring that he was looked after. And in one of the instances of truth being stranger than fiction, I also learned for the first time that Paul Bearer was actually a mortician before he entered the wrestling business.
A great performer who will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.
R.I.P William Moody
